Who We Are
The Amistad Caribbean Arts Camp is a Cleveland-based musical and arts program focused on the Afro-Caribbean, North American, and Latin American cultures.
Our Mission
To make the Afro-Caribbean, Latin American, and North American culture accessible to Cleveland locally and nationally students.
Goals for our Students
Becoming familiar with a significant African Diaspora and Afro-Caribbean music repertoire through music lessons, visual arts classes, dance classes, videos, listening examples, guest artists, and performance opportunities.
Have a better appreciation of different Afro-Caribbean musical genres and how they relate to the broader cultural flow from Africa (the African Cultural Diaspora).
Understanding related concepts such as colonialism, migration, diaspora, and cultural exchange.
Our Story
Amistad Caribbean Arts Program is the premier music education program of Open Tone Music (OTM), a NE Ohio-based non-profit that has been bringing music to youth and students since 2010. For the past four years, OTM’s Amistad program has helped connect these students with their heritage through the study of music, art, culture and history of the African diaspora.
Over this period, the OTM and Amistad teams have worked with Cultural Resources LLC, developers of the Culture Atlas app, who has created three digital archives for the Amistad program:
Amistad curriculum — an online exploration of Afro-Atlantic culture;
Amistad Video Library — a collection of 180+ short (1 to 5 minutes) videos on Afro-Atlantic and world cultures;
Amistad Percussion Library — a collection of videos exploring rhythms of the African diaspora.
In 2022 we will continue to be offering full merit and need-based scholarships to local and out-of-state students. Those interested in participating in 2022 should submit their applications as soon as possible, given our limited camp size this year.
